The explanation why May 1 is observed in both the states as Maharashtra Day and Gujarat Day is that the present Maharashtra State was established on this day, 57 years ago.At the time, Bombay had people who spoke different languages such as Marathi, Guiarati, Kutchi and Konkani, but it did not succeed. And Maharashtra Andolan started to demand that a separate state be created.
The agitation lasted until 1960 and the same year, the India Parliament passed the Bombay Reorder Act to separate Gujarat and Maharashtra into the Multilingual State of Mumbai. The statute was passed on 1 May 1960.
